History of the Club
Alliance Swimming Club has developed from humble beginnings, when in 1946, due to an outbreak of polio all the public pools in Belfast had closed, a group of young men and women living in the Alliance area of North Belfast got together to swim at Macedon Point on the north foreshore of Belfast Lough. Thankfully the club returned indoors once the pools re-opened, and for many years it was based at the old Grove Baths on Shore Road. Over 75 years later, the club is still the main competitive swimming club in North Belfast as well as one of the largest clubs in Ulster.
We are proud to boast a diverse membership in the club totalling well over 200 swimmers, with more than double that number learning to swim with Wavebreakers, our learn-to-swim programme, which is based at the BRA pool. Swimmers come to us from all over North Belfast, Newtownabbey, South Antrim, and the wider Belfast area.
